When you choose a Nissan, you’re protected by a suite of advanced safety features called Nissan Safety Shield 360. These systems are standard on all new Nissans, and they use technology like advanced cameras, radar, and sonar to watch for potential threats and warn you so you can avoid an accident. As your Nissan dealership, we want to tell you more about how some of these systems work.

Lane Departure Warning (LDW)

This feature protects you against accidentally straying from your lane. It uses a dedicated camera to identify lane line markings and road edge markers. Once the lines are identified, the system keeps you centered in your lane. If the system detects you’re drifting toward the lane borders and aren’t actively steering, the steering wheel will vibrate, and the DW indicator on your dash will blink to warn you to turn back into the center of your lane.

Blind Spot Warning (BSW)

Blind spots are dangerous as you can’t easily see anything in them. This means a vehicle can enter a blind spot and be invisible to you when changing lanes until it is too late to prevent a collision. BSW prevents this by using radar sensors in the rear bumper to monitor the neighboring lanes.

If a vehicle is detected, the indicator light on the corresponding side mirror illuminates. If you’re changing lanes and your turn indicator is active, the indicator light on the side mirror will flash on and off, and you’ll hear two beeps to warn you a vehicle is approaching the lane. This gives you enough time to react and avoid a collision.

Automatic Emergency Braking w/Pedestrian Detection

This system uses radar and a camera to identify vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, or animals in your path. Vehicles are detected by the radar sensor in the front bumper, while everything else will be recognized by the camera attached to the top of the windshield and radar. When something is detected, the radar determines the distance to the object and compares it to your present speed to determine if you’re closing too fast.

If a collision risk exists, a yellow warning icon will appear on your screen, and you’ll hear a warning beep. If you hit the brakes, the system increases braking pressure to stop you faster. If your vehicle continues to close on the object, a red warning icon will appear, and you’ll hear a louder beeping sound as a warning to brake or turn away and avoid a collision. The system can also apply hard braking if necessary and almost instantly stop your vehicle.
